Annika Tibando graduated from Toronto’s Ryerson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design in 2008. Post-graduation, she took her dog-eared Art History book and backpacked throughout Europe to explore everything from cathedrals to ruins, Monet to Gaudi, Picasso and beyond. Over the course of three months, she traveled from Turkey to London, visiting Greece, Italy, Spain and France in between. Upon her return, Annika spent two years working for a boutique design studio in Vancouver where she learned the intrinsic rules to running a small business.
In 2010, Annika was humbled to be accepted for multiple design internships in New York at Zac Posen, Proenza Schouler, Diane Von Furstenburg, Elizabeth + James and Alice & Olivia. She went with her instincts and landed at Diane Von Furstenburg. The internship quickly transitioned into a design assistant role within the atelier, designing iterations of the infamous silk jersey wrap dress. After two years working under DVF Creative Director Yvan Mispelaere, Annika formed her creative process from the experience of draping intricate toiles, working on embellishment pieces and assisting with celebrity styles. One of the highlights of her career there was designing the DVF x GAP Kids Capsule Collection for Spring of 2012, which was considered to be one of the best-selling collaborations for both brands.
In the years to follow, Annika launched her own design consultancy, International Citizen llc, which allowed her to work as a freelance designer for a number of companies including Nina Skarra, Vince Camuto, Opening Ceremony, Sea New York, and Ecru. It was during this time she pivoted her career towards ethical, sustainable and environmental design. Her passion for bridging the gap between luxury and conscientious design led Annika to Nina Skarra, a Norwegian based-designer rooted in sustainable luxury. After working as the runway show coordinator for Nina Skarra’s debut Spring 2013 Collection at NYFW, Annika was invited to Oslo for three months to help design the Fall 2013 Collection.
In 2014, Annika contributed to the Resort & Spring 2016 collections at SEA New York. Within the intimate setting of this design studio, she helped not only design but manage the development of each collection with the local factories in the NY Garment District.
Most recently, Annika worked as a designer at Lou & Grey, applying all of her contemporary design background at this American womenswear brand. Working for corporate powerhouse Ascena Retail Group allowed Annika to bring her high-fashion design skills to the masses, building strong industry relationships with cross-functional partners and overseas factories in the process.
After 10 years in the fashion industry, Annika is focusing on projects that combine her passion for sustainability with the world of luxury, which she sees as the future of design.
